Koos Zietsman recently visited Lammergeier Highlands Reserve to test two of our now-famous tracks: The River Rat Run and the Transkei Ridgeback and wrote an article about his experience for the SA 4×4 Magazine.

4×4 Still the Best by Far

Years ago a wise man explained to me about RIP: Never talk about Religion, Income or Politics in a social setting. Now, after having spent many a fine braai night around the camp fire debating and comparing the size and ability of our respective 4×4 vehicles, I can’t help but wonder whether we shouldn’t add another to the list…

But jokes aside. Getting into your chosen truck, bakkie, Landy, SUV or other 4×4 and tackling some tough trail looking for 4×4 adventure and challenge; conquering switchbacks, river beds and steep ascents, should be enough to make you glad you traded that sedan.

Testing your mettle, and that of your 4×4…

If you read the SA 4×4 Magazine, Leisure Wheels or any of the other ‘outdoorsy’ publications, you’ll know that  South Africa has its fair share of places to do just this. But if you really want to get off the beaten track and go where but a few have gone before, you need to take a crack at the Lammergeier Highlands Reserve 4×4 adventure trails.

I know one thing for sure. My Totota Hilux Raider 4×4 has proven itself time and again on some of the toughest trails. And we get it all here. By that I mean weather – like snow and rain – and tricky terrain – steep rocky slopes, switch backs, river crossings, to name but a few. Lammergeier really is the perfect spot to check to test all your vehicles specs. I personally guide the more challenging trails to make sure your 4×4 adventure ends with a smile on your dial.

    For the less adventurous…

No worries if a heart-pounding adrenalin rush isn’t quite your pace or  if you are new to the sport. We have a number of routes to get you upping your 4×4 skills in no time at all and excellent picnic spots where you can stop to rest and take in the view.

    SA 4×4 Magazine Article

You don’t need to take my word for any of this. Koos Zietsman, an ardent 4×4 enthusiast, accepted my challenge. He wrote a true account of his experiences here at Lammergeier Highlands Reserve for SA 4×4 Magazine. The article is titled Higher Ground and if you click on the name, you can read it.
